glass

I took this photo yesterday of a stubby crystal wine glass with a fat stem for Thursday Challenge. Is this what is called a meme? (If not, what exactly is a meme?) The thing about the various photo challenges, Illustration Friday, etc., is that they give me badly-needed structure when I'm floundering. (On the other hand they can be distracting when I'm not.) It's like that old chestnut about playing better tennis because there's a court.

Right now I'm working with some ideas on how to integrate my photos into my paintings -- economically. I have made polymer transfers to use as collage elements using magazine clippings before, and hoping the same will work using images straight from my printer.

I had to look twice at this one, Andrea. It's a wonderful piece and, even while it's a photograph, it's so "you". As far as "meme" goes, quite simply a "meme" is an idea that's repeated over and over and over and over again...I believe that, psychologically, meme's are a road to iconography on the one hand and a direct route to a thousand divergent paths on the other. Either way, they needn't be distracting I shouldn't think (even though I know exactly what you mean). For me, this is akin to the first draft in writing - get everything down, edit later. The kernel of truth here is that your sub-conscious mind has something to say, let everything out and then find what that is.

Thanks Mick. I love your two paths theory. And your kernel of truth relates to the one about genius being "1% inspiration/99% perspiration".

This is a beauty. It is so abstract and intriguing with its fragmented and reflected colors and images....they look like swirling, melting ice. I really had to concentrate to see how it was a photograph of a glass! I want to thank you for your very helpful and detailed response to my question...I will write back later, but now I'm at work trying to read essays. Time to get back to business:<
