illustration friday: under the sea

This theme fits in nicely with the paintings I did last summer called Under the Surface. This small one, 12" x 12", is one of my favourites and is being sent to Erie, PA, with five others today. (Apologies to anyone who's already seen this painting.)

More small ones here.

love this

i really like your use of colors
they always seems contrary to the subject matter, which i like since this asks me, in a very simple way, to reevaluate my own relationship to the objects and the environment in which they might be found. much like matisse. especially in your use of primary colors

I can see why this would be one of your favorites...it has a perfect balance of color, shape and pattern. I could sit and look at this all day! I love the surface of the fish...it looks shiny and slick, but retains the feeling of scales. I imagine them swimming past some underwater mountain or reef...it's very abstract, but completely suggestive - perfect with the attention given to the details on the fish.

I know i have said it a gazillion times that your art is great. It seems like to create your art it would take forever because it looks so good. I am so impatient! How long does it usually take to finish a painting like this? Or do you do it in phases?

1/5/06 5:55 a.m.
Blogger andrea said...

Calvin: This one was done in two phases and came off the brush pretty easily. Sometiems I struggle. It probably took about 4-5 hours from design through completion.
