safety dance

I admit it. I'm not only old enough to remember picture discs, I even bought one once. Driving home today I heard Safety Dance by one-hit wonder band, Men Without Hats. As soon as I got home I had to see if it was still among the vinyl, and sure enough, we still have it. It's a keeper, but not for the music.

Addendum: For those who've never seen a picture disc, enlarge the photo and you will see the hole in the centre and the grooves -- this is the actual vinyl record.

WOW! That's what I call "turning on the wayback machine"! Fortunately for me, I was never obsessive about collecting picture discs, coloured vinyl or 12" singles. That era was surely an interesting time in the world of music though, thanks for jogging the memory! :D-

Totally Cool! collecting is fun. I love music memorabilia and if you watch antiques roadshow they always have the music guy who's specialty is this kind of thing. This one you have is quite special for the picture.

I always enjoy discovering earlier lapses of judgement when go digging through my music collection. I love the "Why on earth did I buy this?" moment.

Yes, but the White Album is one of those absolutely necessary additions to any vinyl collection whereas "Safety Dance" doesn't quite make it... (I suspect there's a greater chance that Kyknoord has the White Album than anything by Men Without Hats :)

Shame on you Caroline! I even got this record in Oxford Street!

I'm definitely old enough to remember them but I'm not sure what you mean by picture disks? LPs with a picture on them? If so, the closest I ever got to see (and own) one of them was a translucent orange disk....no pictures though :-(

Nomad: If you enlarge the picture you will see the centre hole and the grooves. It's not round, but it's a record!

Occasionally they make CDs and ROMs like that, too.

no I still have not recalled any such "discs" perhaps I had a huge collection that got wiped out by fire and its only self-preservation to not even recognise one when I see it! :-)

That is a really kick ass picture disk! Did you ever see the series of pic disks put out by the bad The Cars...in the shape of cars? I love collecting pic disks...but I have to limit myself to a certain number a year, because you can't really play them. I have to buy some play-able records too! Love the blog!
