look at me!

Somehow the Spring 2007 issue got lost in translation, so here's the summer issue of Cahoots magazine. I love that my work is both featured and on the cover of the 'many cultures' issue. One of the angles in my Primal Landscape series is just that: an exploration of the more primitive art of Pre-Columbian Mexico, a culture whose art I love and I have a great deal of curiosity about. I can hardly wait to receive my copy.

And while I'm tooting my own horn, last week I got a really encouraging letter from Dianna Ponting, president of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She travels to the various chapters in BC and Alberta to speak to them about the Federation and at the same time takes along the most recent year's successful candidates for Signature Status (AFCA in my case). Here's what she said:

After having done several presentations of these same slides over and over, I find myself anticipating certain artists work before it comes on the screen and passing along this excitement to the audience. What usually strikes me about these in particular artists is that they’ve really achieved a recognizable high in their careers. They’ve developed a wonderful style all of their own and carry it of with aplomb and technical expertise.

Your work is among these few artists and although there is no second guessing what a jury panel might decide, I want to take this opportunity to suggest that you apply for your SFCA in 2008 because I truly think you are there already.

Not sure yet if I'm ready to take the next step (it took me ages to make the first) but it was definitely a boost I needed. Anyway, I promised no more shameless advertising for two weeks on April 27th, so I think I outdid myself this time. Does that mean I have to wait another two+ months?

Be 'shameless' Andrea. I encourage it and you deserve it and you remind me about myself in my creative endeavors and I know that there are times I have to goad myself to 'dare to be great'. And, if not great, then at least 'respectable' at my craft. You, dear friend, are much more than merely respectable.

You guys are the best! I have 'issues' blowing my own horn so to get this kind of warm feedback just might make me *have* to do it more often! :) It seems when I'm just about ready to throw in the towel (for economic reasons) something good happens.

Jana: you can subscribe at the link to Cahoots magazine in the post and Alda: SFCAs are senior signature members. AFCA/SFCA are explained here:

Associate (AFCA) Status is achieved through selective process of those Active members consistently having demonstrated superior ability in the General Members' Exhibitions and through other jury criteria.
Senior (SFCA) Status - Artists are elected once a year by a consensus of ten other existing SFCA's. There are approximately 60 SFCA's.

I hope you're framing an issue of that magazine. I would.

The only bad part about my most recent AP painting is the constant moving it around. Because I want it to be prominently displayed, yes? But then when I go to my bedroom, I want to look at it. 'Tis a quandary.

I love reading about your success please toot your horn more often.

It is so exciting to see people that you know become famous...and that cover is PERFECT.

I am thrilled for you and thanks for clearing up the Amateur and Senior Canadian F****n' Artist designations...
'cause I thought that the A was for Awesome and that the S was for Super.

Hi guys. I want to respond to everyone because I'm overwhelmed by all the great support (*sniff*), but I'm still fighting this awful virus and haven't an ounce of extra energy. But HE: Amateur! Oh! I'm hurt! :) It's "Associate". Or maybe, referring to KJ's comment, it's some kind of technical term startring with "A", for windshield. Off for a nap now...

Your picture really makes that magazine cover and its fab to hear that others are recognising you!

Its always hardest to recognise oneself... we tend to build ourselves up both too big and too small in odd ways... so why not apply and let them decide... if you don't get accepted this time its just more experience along the way...
